La Leche League meetings cover many aspects of breastfeeding. As we meet the needs of mothers expecting their first child, and the needs of mothers nursing their babies, we find a wealth of information to share and discuss. Since we are all expanding our knowledge of mothering, child development, and family life, no two series of meetings are exactly alike. Please join us for more than one series.

Meeting Formats

In both of our two meetings each month we seek to help each mother with the issues that affect her while also exploring a specific topic in a group discussion. The emphasis of each of the meetings is slightly different -- our 2nd Wednesday meetings focus more on individual mothers' questions, while the 3rd Wednesday meetings have an in-depth discussion topic that changes each month.

Because of this, the two meetings have different formats:

2nd Wednesday -- burning questions are addressed first, and then we proceed with the discussion topic.
3rd Wednesday -- the discussion of the topic takes place first, after which mothers have the opportunity to bring up any questions they have.

We hope you'll join us for both meetings.

3rd Wednesday -- Starting Solids

Tomorrow's meeting topic is starting solids. We'll be getting in depth about the variety of approaches to and types of baby foods -- store-bought, homemade, organics, finger foods, baby-led solids, and your experiences and questions.

If you are able, please bring examples of food for babies or accessories you've used to prepare food for your baby (whether or not they were helpful!).

If your baby hasn't started solids yet, this is an excellent opportunity to come see what the options are.

La Leche League International Encourages Mothers to Recognize Importance of Vitamin D

(October 16, 2008) Schaumburg, IL - La Leche League International encourages all mothers to recognize the importance of vitamin D to the health of their children. Recent research shows that due to current lifestyles, breastfeeding mothers may not have enough vitamin D in their own bodies to pass to their infants through breastmilk.

In October 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that infants receive 400 IU a day of vitamin D, beginning in the first few days of life. Children who do not receive enough vitamin D are at risk for rickets and increased risk for infections, autoimmune diseases, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis.

Vitamin D is mainly acquired through exposure to sunlight and secondarily through food. Research shows that the adoption of indoor lifestyles and the use of sunscreen have seriously depleted vitamin D in most women. The ability to acquire adequate amounts of vitamin D through sunlight depends on skin color and geographic location. Dark-skinned people can require up to six times the amount of sunlight as light-skinned people. People living near the equator can obtain vitamin D for 12 months of the year while those living in northern and southern climates may only absorb vitamin D for six or fewer months of the year.

For many years, La Leche League International has offered the research-based recommendation that exclusively breastfed babies received all the vitamin D necessary through mother’s milk. Health care professionals now have a better understanding of the function of vitamin D and the amounts required, and the newest research shows this is only true when mothers themselves have enough vitamin D. Statistics indicate that a large percentage of women do not have adequate amounts of vitamin D in their bodies.

La Leche League International acknowledges that breastfeeding mothers who have adequate amounts of vitamin D in their bodies can successfully provide enough vitamin D to their children through breastmilk. It is recommended that pregnant and nursing mothers obtain adequate vitamin D or supplement as necessary. Health care providers may recommend that women who are unsure of their vitamin D status undergo a simple blood test before choosing not to supplement.

Schaumburg, IL (April 2008)—Breastfeeding not only provides babies with optimum nutrition, but also helps reduce landfill waste, preserves valued energy, and helps prevent deforestation. Human milk remains the ultimate natural renewable resource and perhaps the most overlooked way of helping to create a healthier planet.

Human milk requires no resources for packaging, shipping, or disposal. The production and disposal of artificial baby milk products add to environmental problems by consuming energy and producing waste. The 550 million tins of formula sold in the United States alone, placed end to end, would circle the earth one and a half times. Each year in the United States, the production of artificial baby milk produces 86,000 tons of tin and 1,230 tons of paper labels which add substantially to the landfill waste.

Breastfeeding preserves valued energy. No energy is wasted producing human milk the way it is wasted when producing artificial baby milk. Precious fuel is used to transport the ingredients of formula and baby milk products. Energy is used for sterilizing bottles and refrigerating them.

The environment also pays a price for growing soybeans or raising cattle to produce artificial baby milk. Clearing land for pasture results in deforestation, which then results in land depletion and soil erosion. Growing soy requires fertilization and irrigation.

While breastfeeding is a wondrous act of nurturing between a mother and child, it also has an enormous impact on the global ecosystem. Breastfeeding not only grows a healthy mother and child but also grows a healthier planet.

Although we live in a polluted world, scientists agree that human milk is still the very best food to nourish our babies. This is further reinforced by reports in recent years of processing errors in the production of infant formula and the contamination of plastic baby bottles with bisphenol-A.

Human milk is not only the very best food for our babies, but it may even protect babies from some of the effects of pollution and contamination.
